On a return trip from America in 1974, artist Joseph Beuys and publishers Klaus Staeck and Gerhard Steidl sat next to each other on the flight from New York to Düsseldorf. Staeck and Steidl had documented the events of the journey in videos, photographs, and audio recordings. During the flight, the three listened to some of the recordings, and Beuys was surprised by how much he laughed in them. This gave rise to the idea of editing the corresponding sequences into an audio document.

Originally, Joseph Beuys wanted to publish the resulting audio collage. However, the master tape of Beuys Laughs was lost and only reappeared in 2020. It is now available in a restored and digitized version as a vinyl LP—in a limited edition of 2,000 copies.
